Прилагательное смежный передается английскими adjacent, adjoining и contiguous. Adjacent имеет в виду пространственную близость двух предметов, отсутствие между ними подобного им третьего предмета, но не обязательно их соприкосновение, и означает 'соседний, близлежащий': adjacent windows, adjacent houses, adjacent villages. В тех случаях, когда имеется в виду соприкосновение по какой-л. одной линии или в одной точке, adjacent и adjoining могут взаимозаменяться: adjacent rooms и adjoining rooms, adjacent patches of land и adjoining patches of land. Contiguous является официальным эквивалентом прилагательного adjoining и предполагает, что сторона, которой соприкасаются смежные предметы, имеет большую протяженность: contiguous countries.Трудности английского языка (лексический справочник).
